In France, car insurance is mandatory for all motor vehicles, including those that do not drive. The market includes dozens of insurers with very variable offers, and the price difference for the same profile can reach several hundred euros per year. Choosing car insurance is not just about comparing premiums: deductibles, exclusions of coverage, and cancellation conditions weigh just as much, if not more, in the balance.

Online cancellation and withdrawal: two contractual traps to know before subscribing

Since June 1, 2023, any contract that can be concluded online must offer a free and easily accessible feature for cancellation, with confirmation of the request. This is mandated by Article L.113-14 of the Insurance Code, as reiterated by Service-Public.fr.

This rule allows for distinguishing a genuinely flexible offer from a mere digital showcase. Before subscribing, check that the cancellation process indeed exists on the insurer’s website or app, and that it does not redirect to a paper form or a mandatory phone call.

The other lesser-known point concerns the withdrawal period. Mandatory car insurance does not grant a 14-day withdrawal right, even if subscribed remotely. Article L.112-2-1 of the Insurance Code excludes automobile liability from the general right of withdrawal. A subscription via the internet or by phone can therefore be firm as soon as it is concluded. Consulting insurance on the Auto XP website allows you to compare the general conditions of several insurers before committing.

Car insurance for electric vehicles: deductibles and batteries, the factors that change everything

The usual reflex is to compare annual premiums. For an electric vehicle, this approach is insufficient. Several insurers report deductibles often higher on electric vehicles, due to the cost of repairing batteries, sensors, and windshields equipped with embedded technologies.

A windshield integrating an autonomous driving camera costs significantly more to replace than a standard glass. Matrix LED optics follow the same logic. The result: even with an attractive premium, the bill after a claim can be heavy if the deductible has not been examined beforehand.

What to compare separately

  • The displayed annual premium, which reflects only part of the actual cost of coverage
  • The amount of deductibles by type of claim (glass breakage, all accident damage, theft), often higher than on a thermal vehicle
  • The conditions for replacing or repairing the battery, with some contracts excluding degradation due to normal wear and tear
  • The coverage for towing to an approved center for electric vehicles, which may be much farther than a standard garage

A comprehensive contract with a low premium but high deductibles on the battery and sensors may end up costing more than a slightly more expensive contract with contained deductibles.

Cancellation after a claim and AGIRA file: what insurers check

A declared claim is not registered in the AGIRA file as such. However, a cancellation decided by the insurer after a claim complicates the search for a new contract. Insurers systematically consult the history of cancellations, and a profile canceled for claims will be offered increased rates, or even coverage refusals.

The distinction between cancellation initiated by the insured and cancellation initiated by the insurer is crucial. In the first case, changing insurers remains neutral on the profile. In the second, the information circulates between companies via the centralized file.

Malus and surcharge: two distinct mechanisms

The bonus-malus coefficient follows precise legal rules and is applied uniformly. The surcharge, on the other hand, falls under the commercial policy of each insurer. Two insurers may apply the same malus but very different surcharges for an identical profile. It is on this second lever that the comparison between offers makes the most sense.

All accident damage coverage and breakdown guarantee: two coverages often confused

All accident damage coverage covers material damage to the insured vehicle, including in cases where the driver is at fault. The mechanical breakdown guarantee, offered optionally by some insurers, covers mechanical failures outside of claims. These two guarantees address opposing situations and do not substitute for one another.

A vehicle over five years old benefits more from a breakdown guarantee than from full comprehensive coverage. The replacement value decreases over time, making all accident damage coverage less relevant if the deductible approaches the residual value of the vehicle.

Conversely, a recent vehicle financed by credit justifies complete all accident damage coverage: in the case of total loss, the compensation must cover the remaining capital due. Ensure that the contract provides for compensation at new value during the first years, and not a market value from day one.

Online car insurance quotes: what the forms do not show

Comparators and online quote forms ask standardized questions about the driver profile, type of vehicle, and declared use. They produce a price, rarely an analysis of exclusions.

Three elements are systematically absent from the displayed results:

  • Waiting periods, during which certain guarantees do not apply after subscription
  • Compensation limits per claim, sometimes lower than the actual repair costs on recent vehicles
  • Conditions for replacement vehicles (duration, category, mileage deductible), which vary greatly from one contract to another

The online quote is a starting point, not a decision-making basis. Reading the general and specific conditions remains the only way to verify what the contract actually covers, and especially what it excludes.

The choice of car insurance relies less on the displayed price than on the adequacy between the contract and the actual use of the vehicle. A driver who travels few kilometers does not have the same needs as a salesperson on the road every day. Reading the deductibles, checking the exclusions, and testing the cancellation procedure before signing remains the most reliable method to avoid unpleasant surprises at the time of a claim.
